Is your child funny? Does your teen think he or she is the next Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres or Martin Lawrence? If so, you might just have a true budding talent on your hands, and the perfect place awaits your child. If your child or teen has an interest in the performing arts (especially the FUNNY ones), Summer Comedy Camp is a great place for a summer retreat. This is an ideal spot for your young comedian to work his or her talent among peers with like interest, and under the guidance of trained professionals.
Summer Comedy Camp is located at Warren Memorial Library Theater, 431 Main Street, in Westbrook Maine. This will be a week-long camp, meeting Monday thru Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. August 18 through August 22. At the end of the week Saturday August 23rd at 6:30pm students will participate in a LIVE performance Graduation show where family and friends are encouraged to come and watch the final project which will include all of the different styles they learned over the week with us. Video sketches filmed throughout the week will be shown as well as a behind the scenes look at the rehearsals. Students will perform their perfected Stand-up routines and a live Improv performance and a DVD copy of the Video sketches will go home with every student for them to watch at home.
Comedy Camp is designed to be fun and full of laughter while at the time teaching valuable performance skills. Group participation and teamwork are stressed in each activity and every student will come away from the experience with a better understanding of how to release their creative potential. The program is two fold in that yes, it helps them to develop their comedic skills. But at the same time students are encouraged to prioritize in terms of their values. They focus on creativity, reasoning, problem solving, critical thinking, and verbal comprehension. The program is designed to teach each student how to find the humor in their lives and how to translate that to the stage. Students will also be taken through the basics and *how-to's* of how to perform in scripted comedy sketches (a la Saturday Night Live), how to spontaneously create hilarious scenarios on the spot with Improv (Who's Line is it Anyway?), and even write and tell their OWN jokes (stand-up).
Students will leave Summer Comedy Camp with an understanding of what it takes to take an idea and turn it into a hilarious presentation. The combined curriculum will provide the basic tools that make a performer responsible, self confident, and a team player. Through the use of special techniques and Improv games, students will learn learn valuable listening skills and how to not only accept the ideas of others but to BUILD on them and work together to make them even BETTER!
